Motorcycles & Scooters

Motorcycles and scooters park free at UCLA in designated spaces located in many parking lots and structures.

Safety First!

Be aware that, while motorcycles and scooters are a convenient way to get around UCLA and Westwood, it is vital to ride safely at all times to avoid injury. In addition, California law mandates that all motorcycle and scooter riders in California must:

  • Use a U.S. Department of Transportation-approved helmet
  • Carry a California Class M Driver License
  • Have a vehicle registration and liability insurance
  • In addition, the non-profit Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) recommends that riders:
  • Get trained (It’s easy to find a location near you on via the MSF Website)
  • Wearing a helmet, while riding a motorcycle or scooter, is required by law
  • The non-profit Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) recommends new riders take an approved safety course. To find one near you and preview what you’ll learn, click on the MSF link on this page
  • Do not carry a passenger, unless the vehicle is designed to carry two people
  • Make sure that all required safety equipment (headlights, brake lights, brakes, mirrors, etc.) are in the proper working condition
  • Obey all traffic laws - i.e. stop signs, right of way, and avoid lane sharing
  • Avoid oil spills and wet roadways; these obstacles can cause the driver to lose control of the motorcycle or scooter
  • Don't let unlicensed or inexperienced drivers operate your motorcycle or motor scooter
  • Watch out for cars and trucks making sudden lane changes, or turns
  • It is recommended that you drive with your headlights on (better chance of being seen by drivers of cars and trucks)
  • Wait for pedestrians to clear cross-walks; don't try to drive around them
  • Look to make sure the lane is clear before changing lanes
  • Obey all speed laws; travel at a safe speed
  • Be alert for opening car doors
  • Don't carry oversized loads on motorcycles or scooters
  • Wear appropriate clothing when riding a motorcycle or scooter (i.e. pants, shoes, heavy jacket, etc.)
  • Maintain a good distance between you and the cars around you
  • Most important of all: Do not drink and drive
